Focusing on Land Transfer to Generation "Next"

A Family Forestland Shortcourse Aug 12 & 19 from 12:30 to 7:00pm Charlottesville, VA Speakers include legal and financial experts experienced in estate planning as well as natural resource professionals who work with landowners to conserve land and plan the future. Don't think a simple "will" takes care of your land the way you want and don't avoid this because it costs too much! The cost of under planning or not planning at all is extraordinary and can result in many unintended consequences for your family and your land. Don't delay what you can do now, plan for the future and engage the next generation of owners... your forestland may be the biggest asset you own. Make sure you actions support your family's values. $50 Registration/Application Fee A reduced fee of $40 total if an additional member of your family joins! (yes, it's less for more) Dinner both nights and a copy of the award winning “Ties to the Land: Your Family Forest Heritage” workbook and DVD is included in the registration fee. For more information, please contact the Northern District Forestry & Natural Resources Extension Program at (540) 948-6881 or slillard@vt.edu Or download an application form (second page) at: http://www.cnr.vt.edu/FORESTUPDATE/calendar/FamilyLandsTransition.pdf Continued from above Virginia Forestland is a valuable asset to society as a whole. The clean air and water we get from it we couldn’t live without. The Commonwealth’s woodlands also provides wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities and renewable wood resources for all Virginian’s. Few people realize that almost 2/3 of Virginia’s woods are owned by private individuals. What these Private forestland owners do with their land affects us all. Few challenges that Virginia’s 373,000 family forest land owners face are more important than the issue of passing the family forest on to the next owners. Many family forest owners want to preserve their family lands but don’t know how to get started, know their options and engage the future owners. If these issues concern you, the upcoming short course may be able to answer your questions. The workshop is co-sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Virginia Department of Forestry, with support from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Ballyshannon Fund, the Piedmont Environmental Council, and others.
